An extraordinary Christmas journey through music, poetry and memory

Between 1935 and 1971, a remarkable Christmas tradition unfolded almost every year at Springhead, the Gardiner family home in the Dorset countryside. Conceived by Rolf and Marabel Gardiner, the Springhead Christmas Play brought together local farmers, craftspeople, schoolchildren and musicians in a celebration of music, poetry, movement and community.

A celebration of Christmas inspired by the historic Springhead Nativity Play

For Sir John Eliot Gardiner, who grew up taking part in these performances, it remains one of his most vivid and cherished childhood memories.

Once, As I Remember… brings this extraordinary tradition to life for a new generation.

Performed by the Constellation Choir & Orchestra under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the programme weaves together exquisite Renaissance polyphony, traditional carols from across Europe and beyond, and verses from John Milton’s Ode on the Morning of Christ’s Nativity.

From the quiet mystery of the Annunciation to the joyful arrival of the shepherds and the adoration of the Magi, the music unfolds as a journey through the Christmas story. Works by Byrd, Palestrina, Praetorius and Sweelinck sit alongside medieval carols, folk traditions and music composed especially for the original Springhead performances.

At its heart, Once, As I Remember… is more than a Christmas concert. It is an exploration of the power of music and shared ritual to connect us across generations – evoking a sense of wonder, belonging and the enduring relationship between humanity, nature and the cosmos.

Rooted in the past yet speaking to the present, this intimate and deeply personal programme celebrates the spirit of Springhead: where art, community and the natural world come together.

A personal connection

Reflecting on the original Christmas Play, Sir John Eliot Gardiner writes:
“It remains for me by far the most precious and vivid of Christmas memories, both visual and aural.”
In bringing this music to audiences today, Gardiner reconnects with the spirit of the original Springhead Christmas Play, celebrating its unique blend of music, storytelling and community.
